Title: Queen Freedom, Queen Harriet
Artist: Jenne Glover
Student Poet: Akilae S.
The Speech I’m the speech of human kind But no one cares Because I’m black. I learned. I worked. but not free I have a lot of work Till I’m free. But no one I know has Freedom cause their skin Is the color of me. Nat Turner fought for his freedom All I see is freedom Brave, big and bold All I see is Harriet Tubman Zoom, zoom she’s gone In a flash, To the north And I see other slaves From the back. No matter the pain There’s power in Black My words in black I’m proud of my freedom And proud to be black. -Akilae S. Tubman Elementary School |
Title: Ferris Wheel
Artist: Adrienne Stelmach
Student Poet: Jackeline A.
Poetry Poetry is family laughing together at memories. Poetry is pancakes in the morning. Poetry is when I go to the fair. Poetry is my favorite possession, which is my lucky bracelet which I keep in my book bag, which I got for my 8th birthday. Poetry is my favorite sport outside, which is dodgeball and soccer. Poetry is when me and family went to Virginia Beach in the summer. Poetry is my favorite music, Keisha. Poetry is like the ocean swooshing and the flying birds chirping. Poetry is my wish for a puppy because I want to treat it like my own little brother. Poetry is when I make a goal and I feel excited, full of joy. Poetry is sky blue. Poetry is my favorite player Messi because he always makes a goal and jumps, and that’s how I feel. Poetry is Thomson tigers drinking tea. We don’t have tails, we have talent! Poetry is showing how I feel. Poetry is never giving up, keep on going! Poetry that I wrote was so special, I would like to remember it forever! -Jackeline A. Thomson Elementary School |

Title: Peace Bakery
Artist: Isabelle Spicer
Student Poets: Noyes Education Campus
Recipe for Peace Once there was a neighborhood that didn’t get along Friends fought friends even though they knew that was wrong Then a bakery appeared with a recipe that made them break into song The community finally had peace for long Empty out a cup of bullies Dump out a cup of fighting Sprinkle in a bit of caring Add a cup of sharing Add a pound of respect Add a cup of sportsmanship Mix in a pound of compassion And bake in a ton of love The community ate and ate until they were so happy they couldn’t eat anymore They decided they should share with more! Soon they filled the bellies of others with a piece of peace Everyone across the world was happy “Peace is for you and you and you,” they said Peace is nice! -Noyes Education Campus |
Title: Go With Me!
Artist: John Lloyd
Student Poet: Ronny B.
Go With Me! As the sun is half set and the beach is calm. The wind blows diamonds from the sand to my palm. As the water's mist rises from the ocean If puts me in a most relaxing motion As the sun's rays shine over the silver seas I see birds flying in groups of threes As I walk on the soft, smooth beach I feel like getting a cover and a pillow and going to sleep. -Ronny B. If I Ruled the World In my world there would be love and never killing and hate In my world I would always be nice and eat anything I want And go to places I've never been And be allowed to stay out as late as I want In my world my team would never fight And we would say once a team, always a team and we would never hate In my world people would think positive and take action about what they do And never about what others do In my world our school would have good lunches and feel good about themselves And feel good about themselves and sound intelligent By Kelly L., Kelly Miller Middle School |

Tears of Blood As she cries Blood pours from Her eyes Tears of blood I look at the sadness In her face I can see into her Eyes like a door…that is open It leads me down to her soul… As she cries, Blood pours from Her eyes Tears of blood I feel her pain and see the troubles She’s faced I can’t take it It becomes overwhelming As she cries Blood pours from Her eyes Tears of blood I think of death As I’m lifting the blade of my face It stings… And hurts… It makes me cry It makes me cry As she cries Blood pours from Her eyes Tears of blood -Kahinda F. Artist: Vanessa Levesque
Student Poets: Latrice W. and Reagan R.
Arguing Hey why did you do that? ‘cause I wanted to Hey give me my ball back That's not gonna happen Arguing leads nowhere Remember when you stole my friend way back in 1st grade? I never did anything like that you stole my friend in 2nd grade That was a long time ago That was two years Arguing leads no where You're acting like a big chimpanzee You sound like an ompaloompa You got your shoes from the dollar store Have you even seen shoes from a dollar store? Arguing leads nowhere Do you want to take a walk? Want to go slide down the slides and talk? Or want to get some ice cream? We could have a sleepover and dream? Arguing leads no where -Latrice W. and Regan R. Wheatley Education Campus |

Free Woman I am a free woman! As you can see! No other woman is as free as me! People say that I’m sour as a pickle, but I think I’m sweet as ice cream. I’m bursting with flavor. Some people believe I’m as mean as the green Grinch on Christmas Day, but honey! You don’t know me yet, because I’m actually meaner than a bull! But I say, no need to hate, because we’re all beautiful! & really, I’m a cheetah – fast talking, fast walking & a fast writing girl. I am free. -Lanayia S. CW Harris Elementary School |

Myself I love myself and everything about myself, my hair is black and red upon my head; Style hot as fire, fashion cool as ice eyes, clothes, cute shoes. My reality and also loving the personality. I think of myself as if I’m filled with inspiration. I have plenty of aspirations: for example, reach college, continue playing soccer, caring for my family, and watching TV. So as you see, being me is not easy. Loving me and everything about me. -Rosalie T., 12 Bancroft Elementary School |

A Strange Apology When we planted our garden I thought “it’ll be ugly,” I thought “it’ll be trash!” Well I was wrong it turned out great! When we planted our garden I thought it wouldn’t grow, I thought the plants would disappear! Well I was wrong, something grew! When we came up with a name I thought it was crazy! But now I embrace it I guess I’ve been guessing Wrong! -Myiah S., Burrville Elementary School |

Let’s All Save The World Together Do you like nature? Do you like playing outside? Do you like hiking or watching the beach tides? So let’s save the world together! It’s getting warmer nowadays So don’t let the hot weather carry you away Reuse, Recycle, Reduce and don’t litter So tell this to relatives, friends and baby sitters! So let’s save the world together! Go green, plant gardens, plant bushes or even a rose And bring back that fresh natural smell to your nose Save electricity and cut off the lights and bring back those peaceful and cooler nights Don’t waste the water we need to drink So please don’t let those precious drops go down the sink! So let’s save the world together! -Jasia S. Burrville Elementary School |

My Original Song My original song brings out the best of me. My original song just sets me so (far) out free. I’m able to express my feelings through a song. So teach me if I’m wrong, but I enjoy my song. So if you’re in love and in da mood… Start singing alone …. My original song has a rhythm of a sensation. My original song grabs your attention. I’m able to express my feelings through a song So teach me if I’m wrong, but I love my song. So if you’re in love and in da mood… Start singing alone. My original song is simply original. Do you like it or not, Like it or not Like it or not -Indania A. & Martha R. Lincoln 09-10 |

Black Sounds like… Hot black coffee pouring, The screeching sound on the blackboard. The cool midnight wind blowing in my hair. Tastes like… Hot scalding dark tea. Crispy burnt toast A creamy soft tootsie roll Dark nasty tasting licorice. Smells like… Squishy burnt cheese The brewing of hot coffee Burning rubber falling off of a race car. Looks like… A black pen leaking ink, New black fleece shoes, A new sewed sweater Feels like… Smooth, thick and wavy hair Soft velvet for a black leather shoe. Moves like… A slow gigantic cockroach A big ugly beetle A fierce black jaguar. -Mandi G. Bancroft Elementary School |

I Have the Potential I have the potential to be the BEST But all you see are results on a test The DC-CAS doesn’t assess my true abilities Provide me with a quality education and I’ll achieve proficiency I’m tired of teachers teaching to a test Then we leave school and still don’t measure up against the rest! Let’s buckle up and not settle for less And work together to be the nation’s best In years to come you will hear and speak my name In our nation’s capital or on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame Remember…..I have the potential to be the BEST, but just know that my worth is more than just the results on some standardized test! -Dallas O. Soccer Family When we play and practice it’s like we’re in a family together. When somebody doesn’t know what to do, we talk to each other and practice until we get it. When someone scores on our goalkeeper we support him and keep trying. It doesn’t matter if we win or lose we are still going to be a family and team. We are a family and a team and we will never forget that. - Truesdell Education Campus |

Title: My Father and Me
Artist: Jose Dominguez
Student Poet: Akeila P.
My Father and Me I’ve loved my father for all these years We have had our happy days, and we have shed some tears. I am one of those people who know what its like to have a father to listen to everyday of their lives. We’ve had our ups, and we’ve had our downs We’ve had our ins and outs and rounds, Does everything he can to protect me Because I know he loves me. But, my father isn’t the only one who loves me, But also my mother, my siblings and the rest of my family. My father is strong, smart, caring and kind, And there is nothing anyone can say to change my mind. I will never love anything more than my dad, because he is the best father I have ever had! -Akeila P. Aiton Elementary School |
